Second Chance Discussion Opportunity


Dear 9th graders,

 If you did not speak during today’s discussion, then select 2 of the following questions (and I want ample thinking and writing) and email me the response by 11:59PM (Thursday) at ppittsdilley@bostonpublicschools.org 

•3. Do you think that there is a difference in between religion and spirituality? Why or why not?
•4. Do you think that religion in the past was mostly a good or negative contribution to human kind?
•5. What about religion in the present, has it been a greater positive or negative force to the world?
•6. What were the Crusades?  
•7. Why do you think that so many serfs volunteered to join the Crusades?  What reasons could lead these men to join a battle thousands of miles away from the homes?
•8. How were the 9-11 Attacks, the “War or Terror” in Afghanistan and Iraq and the recent battles with terrorist groups such as ISIS similar and different than the Crusades?
•9. Is it fair to call the above the “New” Crusades?  Why or why not?
•10. What do you think was the most influential change in the Middle Ages that led to the subsequential “discovery” of the Americas? Defend your position.

•11. How would you describe the speech of Urban II (Pope before the 1st Crusade) that you read yesterday?  How did it compare to Saladin (the Muslim leader who was in charged of fighting Christian Crusaders)?
•12. In the readings about two great Chinese Dynasties, we overlooked “Lily Feet”. After we watch the film:
•A. What is it?
•B. Was it morally right (we are really questioning traditions)?
•C. Is it fair to say that it is similar to high heels? Why or why not?
