Online Question: Teaching About Slavery

This is our online question for December. It is due by Sunday, January 3rd, 2010. Since this is the end of our 2nd term, no late work will be accepted. If you do it before Thursday, then you do not have to worry about it during the break!

Background:
A large segment of the second half of our history class is dedicated to the issue of slavery in the 13 colonies and post Revolutionary War. An11th grade OB student (not one of your classmate) told me that the thing she dislikes the most in history classes is how repetitive they are when it comes to the issue of slavery. Here are some of the things that she told me:

• “Why should I care about slavery”?
• “I have been learning about it (slavery) for the last 4 years and I am tired of it (8th to 11th grade).
• Why is it important to know about slavery? Where am I going to use this “knowledge” in the “real” world?

Questions:

1. In your opinion, should slavery be an important topic in history classes? Why or why not?

If your answer was affirmative (yes)

2. What can we learn from studying the history of slavery in America?
3. What specific stories and knowledge would you like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution (up to 1830’s)?

If your answer was negative (no)

2. What else should history classes focus on? Explain.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that teaching about slavery is too repetitive?

YOUR ANSWER FOR ALL 3 QUESTIONS SHOULD BE 2 TO 3 PARAGRAPHS IN TOTAL.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE VACATION!

Yes it should, it teaches us how people back then treated a certain group of individuals, because of their skin color which is not right. We learn that this isn't right and if that certain group of individuals didn't stand up for eachother just imagine where we would all be today. Also don't treat someone different because of their skin color, ethncity, etc. I would like to learn why people treated slaves like they weren't even human? Or why take a certain group of individuals and enslave then just because you had the power to? I would like to learn these things, because it seemed like people who owned slaves had no respect or self-respect to treat another individual so badly and be so heartless. We've come a long way from that and that's a good thing.

Slavery is taught through out the world, especially in public schools. It is a very good lesson and should never stop being taught. There are many reasons why slavery is a good lesson and a good topic in general. In my opinion some of those reasons are, many ethnicity groups learn from their pass ancestors, it is way important then other lessons taught, and it teaches the way some people think about others. It is also important because not only was slavery in the past but it is in the present and sure to be in the future. Slavery is a important topic now and it will always be later.

Slavery is an important topic in history class because we learn many things from studying the history of slavery. Some things that we learn from studying the history of slavery is the affect that your skin color has on the outcome of your life and most importantly we learn from our mistakes. For example discrimination is a big role in slavery. Many whites felt superior to other races because they were smarter and in the time much more powerful. By knowing this we have learned that everyone is equaled no matter how light or dark your skin is and no one is your pet no matter how dumb they are.

I have many questions about slavery during the colonial and post revolution. I researched it and discovered some horrifying pictures of the slaves being beaten. I wanna know why was they beaten on there backs and with what? When there masters were mad would they take it out on them? Did a white person ever get beaten and what was the cause? Last but not lease i wanted to know what year was the most killings of slaves done and why? These are some of my questions i still have about slavery during the colonial and post revolution.

In conclusion slavery is a great topic always was and always will be. It should never stop being taught because of all the benefits it has on our life. Slavery is a sad topic but what we learn helps us rise above sadness and into happiness because we are not that way anymore. Slavery has taught us many things and for that we should be greatful and continue teaching it to our younger generation.

In my Opinion Slvery is and should be an important topic in history classes. i think this way because slavery was a dark time in american history and shows the pain an entire race had to go through and simply beacause of the fact that it touched so many lives it has to be docemented and powplw should know about this. I think the most important stories are the stories that exaplian why and what did the slave owners think and what did the slaves do and none of the poopular all slaves were beaten to death mombo jumbo. I want to know how did the slave owners justify this in ther own words and what really happened.

Online Question : December
In my opinion, I do think that it is a good idea to teach and talk about Slavery in the classrooms. Slavery is an important topic to discuss and learn about in American history. I think that this is a good topic to discuss and learn about because it is very important to know where we as Americans came from No matter if the slave was Black from Africa, Native American from America, Spanish from Spain, or ect. from wherever there were other slaves. No matter what race someone is, it is still important to still have some sort of back-ground information about what our ancestors had to go through in order to have rights and privileges, to become and grow into what we are and have today. We should do this because it teaches us in a different way to think and to teach us not take the things we have today and the people around we have for granted.
When we study history we can study how the slaves lived, how they were treated, and what they fought for and went through in order to make our lives over time better. We can also learn about specific people that may have rebelled against being a slave that really took drastic actions towards the people that were trying to gain control over them.
The stories we can learn from this topic of slavery are the important people that either escaped from slavery or helped many people escape like Harriett Tubman and the underground railroad, or the slaves that were slaves but were treated more like humans not really as slaves such as Frederick Douglas.

In my opinion, slavery should be importance topic in history classes, because we can learn about those different country slavery what they are doing and what are their life look like. All the Northern states passed emancipation acts between 1780 and 1804. In the South, however, slavery expanded with the westward movement of population. As long as slavery expanded, it remained profitable and powerful and was unlikely to disappear.

I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution was A family heritage of ambivalence toward slavery, an irresistible cultural movement, a dynamic English friend. These influences, taken together, shaped John's views on slavery, but he still lacked a catalyst to compel him to act on his ideas. His service as an officer in the American war of independence provided that catalyst. and Laurens immediately journeyed to South Carolina to urge his state government to vote yes. As Laurens departed, William Whipple, a delegate from New Hampshire, reflected on this opportunity for revolutionary change.

History classes should focus on the leader or master to leader and control the slavery. Because we should know about what they want slavery to do for them and how to treat the slaves. Yes , I agree with the statement that teaching about slavery is too repetitive because we also see the slavery and learn the slavery in our history book.

I think the slavery should be an important topic in history classes. We can learn the dark times of black people from studying the history of slavery in America. The life of black people were hard at the time. They bought and sold liked the livestock and merchandises. They have not rights, needed to hard work and maltreated by the white people often. “Didn’t to repeated the wronged of the history again”. It is a history marker to us.
I would like to learn “why did the people bethink of the slavery? why did the slaves are angry but just to forbear? What happened made the slaves started to revolted? What did the slaves do for revolt? How did the revolt of slaves are successful? Is there have some important people when the slaves started to revolted?” about slavery during colonial and post revolution.

In my opinion slavery should not be an important topic in history classes, because soon slavery entirely will end. Slavery is almost extinct now, and it probably will never be used again. It also shouldn’t be an important topic, because it happened a really long time ago and we do not have slavery in the United States today. I think slavery shouldn’t be an important topic in history classes, because we will not need the knowledge to know about it in the future. There will no other topic related to slavery in the present or future.

History classes should focus on past history knowledge that can help us in the present or future. History classes should focus past history that can or will affect us today. We should focus more on situations in the present, like our economy, or global warming, etc. I agree with this statement because we learn too much about slavery in history classes. History classes are too repetitive about slavery, and maybe learn something related or unrelated to slavery.

Is slavery important?
Considering that every event that cause a change in society is history. Slavery is part of history and should be consider important in the study of this. Slavery had a lot effects in society and many of those effects made big changes. Many of the greatest empires had slavery, and in order to understand their economical resources and daily living the slaves are a big part of it. Slavery was for the most empires, their base for economy, because the slaves offered a good labor and without getting any pay, and these poor people were forced to work without any benefit.
As we learn about slavery, we can discover the use of slaves affected the economy and the development of the colonies in America and other empires in the world. We can learn also how this affected the daily living to the colonies in North America. How the excessive use of slavery made the black population grow up, until a point were in some colonies the African slaves population were a ¾ of the colony. Also it is a good way to see the origins of the civil war in U.S, and we can recognize and understand the origins of many of African Americans population in Unites States and Black population in many parts of the world.
I would like to learn in the history class many things as, how the use of slavery did affected the American society, today and in the past. Also some of the important people that fought for slaves rights, and black leaders. I would like also to know if there were any black soldier in the revolution war, and how important they were and how they were treated. Also how the economy was affected by use of slaves in American colonies, and the educational and economical difference between those colonies with more slaves and those with less. Studying those topics in history class, I think it would pave the way to understand civil war and it would make me realize the importance of slavery in history.

In my opinion I think that slavery should be an important topic in history classes. I said yes because you can learn a lot from slavery. Slavery was a very bad way to treat Africans. The slave owners treated them like toys they would sell and trade them. We can learn that slaves shouldn’t be treated like this. They shouldn’t use people like this just because they may be poor or may be a colored person. Also we learn how these Africans suffered while they were being forced to become slaves.
I have learned a lot about slaves in the past few years. What I want to learn is what are the slave owners’ reasons for getting or owning slaves. I know that the slave owners wanted the slaves to work for them, they didn’t care how much the slaves suffered or how they felt about working for them. The slaves didn’t have a choice whether they wanted to work or not, they were forced to work or they would either stay in the country they came from or they could get killed. Also who came up with the idea to having slaves to do their work for them? Life was so unfair for the slaves, they don’t deserve that.

Slavery should be very important in History class because it and when we learn it so Students will know that American History isn’t always perfect. It should be important because Students should know how slaves were treated and how people respected them or hated them. Slaves have gone a long way throughout America’s history, especially when it made a shocking, drastic change into their history. Of course it’s important because it made other people understand what they have been through. They have suffered more than us, so we should learn about them to understand, and relate to them.
Specific stories that I’d like to be taught about slavery in the colonial and post revolution would be about how they were treated by people and how diverse people treated them. I want to learn how tough their lives are and how much they suffered. Students should know how America or anywhere else has treated them so poorly like trash and students should be able to understand them, even if it doesn’t seem important to them. More I want to learn about them is how their lives were like and biographies of families or individuals telling their story and what they sacrificed and what they would do if they weren’t in slavery.

(Juan Fonseca) I think slavery should be tought in history class, becouse is shows how hard life used to be for those who where and are known as minorities. slavery was brought to a whole new level when it came to America. it was based on race when it came here and not on money reason like the origianl slavery, or indentured servents. Most African, and Hispanic descendents dislike the fact that their ancestors were slaves, but when it comes to learning the detail on how it happened and why it happened, their not interested. it should be tought to show us how we came to be, without them we wouldn't be the people we are today.

Slavery is a great subject. Not only is it very historical, it was ancient. it can date back to the egyptions and the jews. This lesson in time should be tought to all how descend from slaves and slave owners, to show the struggles of almost every country who used slaves, including America. Our great country wasn't so great at one time. It went through hard times of debt, civil war, national war and segragation. Teaching students about slavery, the civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, Rosa Parks etc., is all part of our great and not so great history. Some people believe that this country just came to be great. Some beleive even today that all is forgoten, their rong, slavery left a big scar on the people of the U.S. even today, although slvery is illegal, racism still goes on, abuse of those with "colored" skin still goes on, to this day our country isn't perfect. To make it perfect for the future generations teachers have to show students know what happened in the past and what came of it. Sure, minorities gained the power and respect they deserved for a long time, but that came out of wars and brutal rebelions. To make sure history doesn't repeat itself we must show them how to and not to make the world a better place. Slavery should be a major subject in all history classes.

In my opinion I think that Slavery should be an important subject in History classes. I say this because it good for students to learn about the back ground of slaves. It teaches students about the way that some people were treated back then and the rights that they didn't have. Where to now that student can see how much Slavery impacted them back then and still today. I think from learning the history of slavery us students can learn now slaves were treated and the things that they had to do for their owners. Also how and what slaves have done to make us students today have the rights and freedom that we do. Some specific things that I would like to learn about slavery is how some slaves escaped from their owners and also the things that some slaves did to actually help us now to have the things that we do. So yes I do think that Slavery should be an important topic in ALL History classes.

I dont think slavery should be taught in our history class. In my opinion it is useless to know becuase it happened so long ago and its over now. Instead of teaching students about slavery over and over again teachers should teach us about new things. they should focus on topics like famous black people. In your history book you would have one page for Martin Luther King or Harriet Tubman and a whole chapter on Columbus and his voyage to "discover" The Americas. What im trying to say is if they only give little detail on the people who helped get rid of slavery why teach at all.

Yes, I do think that slavery is taught repeatedly through out history courses. We learn about what slaves were there to do from 1st to 12th grade. And every teaher would teach it different so you end up getting more and more confused as the years go on. I think the topic on slavery should be taught once when your of an age to remeber what you were taught.

I think that slavery should be an important topic in history classes because slavery was an important reaccuring part of the past. Most people learned that slavery happened only in America. Although that I know that slavery happened in others place of the world many people don't. Therefore, it is important that we learn more about slavery.

We can learn the beginning of slavery, where and when it happened. We can also learn what types of people and what types of slaves where in slavery. We can learn how people were treated. We can learn who made a difference in trying to end slavery.

I would like to know about everything. Theres nothing specific I would like to learn about.

I think slavery should be taught in history class, because it has to do with peoples culture and slavery started a revolution which made a big difference in people's lives. For example, my ancestor's were slaves in India and I would like to learn why a lot people were treated the way they were treated. Also how they were treated. We can learn a lot from studying the history of slaves in America. We can learn about how the Revolution started, and about many famous people. We would learn about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Abraham Lincoln and others.
I would like to learn about my roots in slavery. Also I would want to learn why was slavery necessary and why did people want slaves. I would like to learn about what the slave went through and how slaves fought for their freedom. I also would like to learn how Abraham Lincoln helped the slaves and helped stopped slavery. In conclusion I think slavery should be taught in history class.

In my opinion, slavery should be an important topic in history. During the second half of my history class, slavery was a large segment to be dedicated to the issue in the 13 colonies and post Revolutionary War. Slavery was a major event that occurred to be known and should be expose to students who have no idea about slavery. Also, slavery have ended years ago but there are many people who stood rigid whose ancestors where part of slavery that may affected them to know more beyond the positive views of slavery.

What we can learn from studying the history of slavery in America is to have the knowledge of the origin of slavery and what have caused to be part of the history of America. Many people would not care of slavery, may have learned many times that its to tiring, and/or it should not be important that it would not be useful as “knowledge” in the “real” world. History is the resource of America’s past filled with fantastic and important stories that should spellbind the students to gain interest to obtain their nation’s stories to be heard and known. If slavery was not expose to Americans then there will be a blank space in history and a massive gap in between. Slavery was an tragic event that have occurred to satisfied the “masters” to have a easier life and not care about the people taken in as slaves. Also, optimism approach have alienated people of color to question why history point out the positive views and not the negative views. Studying the history of slavery in America would be and should be a useful knowledge to obtain.

The specific stories and knowledge I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution is the affect on people went through and suffer to be known in history. History have gave several reasons but the reason I want to know is to dig deep the roots of why the suffer and agony slavery had caused. There are stories that still have not been cover that it should be expose to America and myself. This is the only specific stories and knowledge I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution.

In my opinion, slavery is an important topic, but shouldn't be taught every single year. After all the years we've been going over slavery, it gets to be unnecessary to keep reviewing. If we learned about it for a year or two, that should be enough for us to remember. I don't think all the tiny details being added each year is necessary. I do agree with the statement that teaching about slavery gets repetitive.
I think history classes should focus also on other countries' history. Other countries may have history that we'd be more interested in. Why should we keep being told the same thing over and over when we can learn about other different people? I would like to know more about how countries developed and what made there be so many of them.

Yes, I think slavery is an important topic in history class because slavery can incarnate the difference between the poor people and the rich people. Slavery was direful because the owner treated them really bad. Some of the slaves were getting torture by their owner. That a bad thing in our world history. So I think the students should learn that stuff and understand the poor people or some African American’s life. Now we don’t have slavery but it doesn’t mean that slavery is not existent. So the students should know what slavery is and how they work that kind of past of USA.
Yes, First we can learn about the backgrounds of the slave like where did they come from and the reason they became slaves. And then we can learn the life when someone owned them. For example: how the people torture the slaves and what the slaves have to do for their owner. We can also learn about the feeling of the slaves.
I would like to learn about how the people treated the slave. I would like to know what happened when a slave had a nice owner or he had a bad owner. I was thinking nice owner probably let the slave did work, but the bad owner would gave a lot of work for slave and tortured them.

1. In my opinion slavery should be taught in history class because at some point n time everyone’s ancestors had to deal with/ go through slavery and I think history class could be made fun my adding more topics that relate to the students.
2. From studying the history of slaves in America we can see how the land was sort of formed what type of people were in America and you can also learn about culture.
3. I would like to learn how Spanish races and minority races came about. Not including races like Native American, white and black. I think this ties back to slaver because Spanish can be a combination of those races.

Teacher should teach about slavery in their history classes because it's of American history. It shows students how America really was back then. The many disputes colored people had to go through to get equal rights as whites. Slavery teaches people on how racist some parts of America was. Slavery should be taught in history classes because it happen for 360+ years. We learn many things from slavery. For example, thya affect it had on colored people and the how your life turns out to be in the future.Slavery is a graet topic to focus on because it shows us more things we neveer knew about America.

Slavery is a very important topic in history class. It has been going on for years and years. It is even going on now! Why should we not learn it? It is a huge part in the history of the United States because that is how the United States made so much profit from their crops. Slavery is important because it was one of the greatest mistakes of mankind. By learning more and more about slavery we can hope to prevent this mistake from happening again. By studying slavery we could learn from our past mistakes. We could learn why people chose to get slaves, and how they were treated. This is important because we have to understand that certain people are still in this condition today. We have the responsibility as humans to try our best to save them. We could also learn why slave traders changed to a specific group of people who had less power than them, and why they were not treated like humans. I do not have any really really specific topic, but I would like to learn more about their relationship to the master. We have to think about the fact that some masters were kind to them. I would like to learn more about the slaves on each state and how they differed from another state's slaves. I also want to learn about any rebellions of the slaves that happened, and whether it failed or succeeded. The thing I want to learn most about slavery is why people did not have enough of a heart to treat people nicer. I want to learn about the philosophy of the slaves and the slave owners. Slavery repeats itself because we don't care about it. We have to avoid the mistakes that are preventable.

i think that Slavery is important, because it teach how important human right is. During the past, slavery happened because of different skin color, or maybe about religious. And people mistreated each other. We can learn more about human right and how slavery began. Not just America that have slaves but many other countries have slave too, but they all just trade with each other as goods.

i would like to learn more about how slavery started and why Massachusetts was the state that have the most slaves back during the colonial time.

Personally I do think slavery should be an important topic in history class. I think so because it’s a part of U.S. history and we might as well learn about it if we learn about every other part of U.S. History. If we can learn about Columbus then we can also learn about the people he enslaved which were the Native Americans. Also it’s important to talk about how Europeans treated Africans and Blacks earlier on and how they used them as slaves. They sold colored people and other people that didn’t look, dress or live like them, and these people worked for no pay. These are the things we need to know about American history to know about our true past and Americas true past.
By learning the history of slavery in America can teach us a lot, one definite thing it can teach us is things aren’t how they used to be. Blacks and colored had no rights back in the day and weren’t considered human, so they worked with no pay for Americans and Europeans. With this we can learn how heartless America used to be, and how hard blacks had to work to get their rights. Also we can learn how lazy Americans are and how blacks and slaves shaped this country. I Would like to learn more about how the Europeans found the Blacks and turned them into slaves hen they walked up in their land in Africa.

Yes, slavery should be a big topic in history. I believe this because everyone should be able to learn aboutthings that their family members from years ago, went through. The struggles that went on and how they suffered. This would be a great thing to think back to, how people in slavery went through hard times, but they managed to get set free. Going through that changed things in the world. The change wasn't fast, but it still managed to happen. People might think that it wouldn't be fair to learn about slavery because it might apply to only certain people, but i believe that it's wrong everyone was affected by slavery, but it was just that some were affected more than others.

I would like to learn about why black people as an individual was choosen to be slaves? How come whites couldn't/didn't want to do things on there own? who was the 1st slave to be killed during colonial and post revolution times?

For students who feel that history classes are too repetitive on the subject on slaves, I strongly disagree and feel it’s an important topic to be taught in history classes. Slaves were important for economic development, they were reliable for their skillful abilities in the farms, and worked very hard. They were useful in many of the 13 colonies, and were basically hardworking providers. They either served as warriors, servants, craft men, tutors, and/or victims of ritual sacrifice. Many of their lives weren’t easy, some of them rebelled either physically or verbally, and many of the Africans tried to re-live the lives they use to live back in Africa like religion, style, and family traditions, but barely had personal freedom, a voice, or much of anything. Slavery in the past just shows how they were treated, and the positions they were in, and the impacts slaves have in today’s world. That they weren't valued but were valuable.
The only specific story I have more interest in about slavery during colonial and post revolution (up to 1830’s) is how long did it last? What they served as? How they lived, as in their personal living, and fears, attacks, abuse, and their treatment. Mainly, I just would like to know how they were important during colonial and post revolution.

I think that slavery is an important part of history but needs to stay in the past. I think that we've been taught enough about slavery and each year we learn the same thing over and over. I think that the teaching of slavery only shows the accomplishments of African-Americans over time.

We can learn that people can be held as hostages and put to work for a long time. We can learn even with these problems some slaves may even survive. We can learn that slavery didn't only happen in the United States.

I don't know what that is. But I would like to learn anything that doesn't involve anything we've already learned. I also would like to know what made people decide to take others and enslave them. I think that slavery is important but loses its importance with the fact that its so repetative.

In my opinion I think that slavery is an important topic. The slavery in our country has affected us a lot and it is a part of all of us, if we did not learn it then it would be like not knowing a part of your self. From studying slavery we have a lot to learn. We can learn about the people that help make our country, we can also learn about the people that opposed slavery and rebel groups. I would like to learn about more of the people that played a major role in changing slavery. I would also like to learn about the famous slaves that also had some effect on slavery.

Slavery should be taught in school because it helps students learn about each other's history. Almost (if not) every nation has been enslaved by another and to not share that with pupils is wrong. Yes, it may seem repetitive to talk about slavery when studying American history but it is informative to know how and why it started and if possible, exactly who started it. Then from this, we can learn about slavery effectively, rather than just some white people who took advantage of black people.

Specific facts/knowledge I would want to know about slavery in the 1830s would be if any Black people hurt any White people while trying to escape slavery or how White people justified enslaving Blacks. I would also want to if there were other popular methods of escaping slavery other than the underground railroad. These facts are ones that I have never found in a history textbook or only has a sentence or two about these facts. This is another reason why slavery should be discussed in class, because there might be information that the textbooks could be leaving out. That is why slavery is an important topic, because it is a major part of history that should be told entirely, not in pieces.

I think that black history should be taught throughout history classes.Black history is a big part of our history today. If slavery didn't happen back then how would we be were we are today? We as people can learn alot from the mistakes of ou countrys' past,so that these events won't reoccur.

I know that sometimes in history classes certan subjects feel really repetitive, but if you actually pay attention you end up learning a lot more about the topic than what you started off with.If you think that black history is repetitive, then what bout Christopher Columbus ? I started learning about him when i was in kindergarden, and in about every history class i've been in i learn more and more about him.

There isn't anything specific i want to learn about when it comes to Black History, or slavery.I just want to know the basics. How did it start ? When did it finally end ? Those types of questions.I never think that you can too much about history, you can always know too little, but there i always more to learn.

I don’t think history should be an “important” topic but it should be taught because it’s an important part of our history, as well as a very major point in time for african americans. I don’t mind being taught about slavery because I find it interesting seeing how our world has and hasn’t changed. I feel it’s kind of important because it lead to segragation and many other things.
When studying the history of slavery you can learn many things. A few things you might learn would be the history of african americans, how slavery lead to segregation, how slavery was brought to america, and much more. I don’t have a specific story or any thing I’d like to learn about, just expanding my knowledge on slavery and major events that happened with slaves (ex. Frederick douglas , Harriet Tubman, etc.) would be nice to learn about.

i think that slavery is an important topic in history class because it is part of our nations history. the united states would be without different slavery. there are also many things you can learn from slavery in america and should be taught in history class. something we can learn is racism and how africans were discriminated because they were slaves. we also learn it so it wouldnt happen again and learn from our mistakes.

some stories i would like to learn about are stories from famouse slaves that stood up for themselves and did something good. also i want to learn about the achievements that were made during slavery.

Personally, yes and no. I sympathize with this 11th grader also, we have been learning about slavery too long. It would be more interesting if we at least expanded the teaching of slavery to other nations like to Asia or Europe, and learn about more modern slavery in other places, so we can at least catch up with what is going on nower days. The fact that the teaching of slavery is "repetitive" makes it more boring. We should learn about things other than slavery for a change. But, it is also very interesting, how people lived as slaves and what not. Nevertheless, slavery is an important topic to learn about in history classes, mainly because it is and was a big part of most if not every culture's and nation's history, including the history of our America. So yes, slavery is an important topic, but not so important anymore because we have been learning about it long enough. But now that I think of it, slavery is an important topic, and the fact that learning it continuoulsy makes it more "boring" and less interesting does not interfere with the fact that slavery is important.

From studying the history of slavery in America, we can learn how people lived under these conditions(slavery) and how they were effected by them. Also, we can learn why things are the way they are today, like why slavery is an awful thing, and how we now have an African American president. We can also learn why people started slavery and why they wanted it, in contrast, why people wanted to end it. I would like to learn about how people lived as slaves during the colonial and post revolution. How they were able to get by, what their thoughts were, if they ever dreamed of freedom, and if they wanted freedom at all. If they were alright with being a slave, or if they sought for a revolt, for freedom. Basically, a slave's personal life, or a slave owner's personal life, a person who lived during and around slavery/slaves in general.

In my opinion, I say slavery is an important topic in history class because it's basically how America became what is it today. It's a part of America's history that lasted for centuries and which lead to the civil war and many historical figures fighting for people's rights.

What we can learn from slavery is how America was like in the past and now in the present. We can also learn about historical figures who fought for peoples rights and the civil war which took place to abolish slavery. We can also learn how women were finally recognized as equals.

The thing I want to learn about slavery is how slaves communicated with each other seeing as most of them speak different language when they were first brought here and the dances they created that turns out to be much more than dancing.

Even though I said all those things, it's tiring to learn about slavery, specific dates, and the biography of the people who made names for themselves.

Anything involving human rights is important. It always is inspiring to hear the history of hardships later overcome. Slaves are those who experienced racism and laws where they are denied rights. Slaves were severely punished or killed if their never-ending arduous work load was not completed. Some were also subject to painful motivation in order to continue. Society was only slightly improved in the United States during the early 1900’s. When African-Americans were no longer considered property, yet they received subpar facilities compared to those of Caucasian ethnicity. I find unequal treatment outrageous, and it should be taught, but it is to repetitive.

Yes, slavery should be an important history topic in class because you never learn too much about yourself. I believe that everyone originated from Africa and the Blackman, so therefore all of our roots are in Africa. We can learn many aspects from slavery like the different African heritages and tribes and cultures there were back then. Also how and why we were chosen to be slaves.
I would like to learn of Kings and Queens of Africa and its beauty. Also I would like to know and learn what were our original language, religion, and way of life. Also how everyone else evolved from black people.

Many people may argue that slavery should not be an important topic in history classes. But personally I believe that slavery should be an important topic in history classes. I believe this because you must know what happened in history to know why some people act the way they do. You may also learn about slavery in history that would lead to how your ancestors were treated or how they lived back in history. Slavery being taught in history class would inform students about information that can lead them to ask the questions such as if their ancestors were slaves or if their ancestors were slave owners. This will teach them about their background.
We learned from the past history that most caucasion people thought that they were superior to black people. Also we can learn that the many slaves were forced to do whatever their master demanded. If slaves didn't abide by construction, then they would get a certain penalty. Sometimes whipped, raped, or even killed. What ever came to the masters mind.
I would like to learn about many stories, histories and even many knowledges in slavery. Many things in general such as who started slavery, when did slavery begin, whose idea was it and why, etc. I would like to learn about where did it mainly start and what races were first slaves in the beginning.
