Online Question: Teaching About Slavery

This is our online question for December. It is due by Sunday, January 3rd, 2010. Since this is the end of our 2nd term, no late work will be accepted. If you do it before Thursday, then you do not have to worry about it during the break!

Background:
A large segment of the second half of our history class is dedicated to the issue of slavery in the 13 colonies and post Revolutionary War. An11th grade OB student (not one of your classmate) told me that the thing she dislikes the most in history classes is how repetitive they are when it comes to the issue of slavery. Here are some of the things that she told me:

• “Why should I care about slavery”?
• “I have been learning about it (slavery) for the last 4 years and I am tired of it (8th to 11th grade).
• Why is it important to know about slavery? Where am I going to use this “knowledge” in the “real” world?

Questions:

1. In your opinion, should slavery be an important topic in history classes? Why or why not?

If your answer was affirmative (yes)

2. What can we learn from studying the history of slavery in America?
3. What specific stories and knowledge would you like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution (up to 1830’s)?

If your answer was negative (no)

2. What else should history classes focus on? Explain.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that teaching about slavery is too repetitive?

YOUR ANSWER FOR ALL 3 QUESTIONS SHOULD BE 2 TO 3 PARAGRAPHS IN TOTAL.

HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE VACATION!

In my opinion, slavery should be an important topic in history classes, because it teaches how hard life was for the “color” people back then. And how society discriminated them for their color so much that a clan was made to kills as much black people as they could, and the clan still standing in the 22th century, the clan name is klu klux klan aka “KKK”.

2. Like I say in the first question, it teaches how hard life was for the “color” people back then. And how society discriminated them for their skin color. The life for the “color” people was very hard, because they went from slaves to very poor people. When there was slavery the black had to work on the white’s farm and do all of their house “shores”. The when slavery was demolished they were poor their life wasn’t as good as the whites, they had to be careful for every step they make, because there was always a white person behind them to either kill them or send them to jail for no reason.

3. Well some specific stories and knowledge I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution is why president Thomas Jefferson rape so,sooooooo, many black woman and had many babies with them even dough he supposedly hate black people. Did the people do something about it? Was he still treated the same? Did someone wanted to kill him because is a crucial thing to do to a person? Or was he treated either more or less respect?

In my opinion slavery should be a very important topic in history class. It after all was a very big part of peoples lives in history. So many things in life would be diffirent if it wasn't for slavery. It after all has such an impact on the lives before, now, and after. So yes i beileve slavery should be an important topic in history.

We can learn a lot of from studying the history of slavery in America. For one we can learn how not to make the mistake for treating one race higher than the other. I would like to learn more about how slaves were treated. I already know much about the fact that they weren't treated well and lower to the whites. However, i want to know about their daily lives. About the ones who suffered the most and the others who got to escape from their owners. And i also want to learn about how each colony treated their slaves differently. I belive the history of slavery in America is infact very important and i hope to learn much about their lives.

No I do not think slavery should not be an important topic. It should be more of a subtopic. This is because slavery is like the number 5 thing that affects society today. Instead they should teach about the things that build American society. Things such as the Supreme Court cases. This teaches more of American society.
And the slavery things is a little annoying. You probably hear about in elementary school and it probably know about it. So it gets boring.

1). In my opinion, i do believe slavery is an important topic in history classes because it shows us who these people were and what they did for a living. For most people, this topic can also touch the story of their ancestors and that's something they should all have a chance to know.In addition, because our history involves enough details about the white cultures it should also include some of other different groups and cultures.

2). By studying the history of slavery in America we can learn about what this group of people did for a living, their traditions and their morals. In addition, by being introduced to the story about what these colored people did throughout their lifetimes, we can learn about many of those who fought for their freedom and the many others who brought changes to America. These are things we can learn.

3). In my opinion i would like to know what the slaves believed in, (religious wise) and why did many of the white people believe they were superior than the colored people. Also, i would like to learn about how did the ways slaves differed from each other according to the colony and genres. These are my main interests.

Teaching About Slavery
In my opinion, slavery should be an important topic in history class because it is vague history that is much talked about but never in much detail. Every year we as students learn about the same overall topic of slavery for a short period of time. The teachings that we learn on a yearly basis never get deep in the topic of slavery, we touch upon the topics like “Harriet Tubman, Underground Railroad, the brutal treatment, and etc.” If we are being taught about slavery we would want to know the details of the bad times and the good times. Slavery is a very important topic to be taught to students but students don’t want to learn the same thing every year.
We can learn a lot of significant information from studying the history of slavery in America. Students want to learn about the information not in the text books. Students already know the general information on the Underground Railroad because it’s told to us in the books. We can learn things that aren’t told to us every year. Once we are taught about the things that we don’t already know it would be more interesting.
Some specific stories and knowledge I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and past revolution is all the facts not in the text books. We students know most things there is to know about past slavery. I want to know about how the slaves interacted with people, if there were people that didn’t want slaves, if any slaves ever killed there owners, or anything like this. In conclusion, I do think slavery should be an important topic in the history class because students need to be informed on how American life has changed.

My answer is half yes and half no.
In my opinion, slavery should be important topic in history classes. But it shouldn't be too repetitive. Slavery is a very important topic in history class in every country because most of the countries had slavery before. By learning the history of slavery, so people make the same mistakes again.

I think the schools should spend 1-2 years to teach students about slavery and focus on the world history for the rest. World History is important topic than slavery. World history will help students to know or to learn better about the world. It will slao help some students if they want to become travelers, businessman..etc.

1.I think Slavery should be a very important topic in Amirican History classes. Slavery should be a important topic in History because it teaches how hard life was for the African Amirican people back then.

2. one thing We can Learn is the daily lives of African American Slaves. Another thing we can learn is about how the white people justifyed Slavery. The last thing we can learn if anything is how not to Treat another Amirican.

3. some specific stories and knowledge I would like to learn about slavery during colonial and post revolution is why a few older presidents would act like they didnt agree with slavery and then go home to a bunch of slaves and some of the presidents actually raped there Slaves

Yes. Slavery should be a very important topic in class rooms
because the society we live in would probly not be possible without slaves. Slaves were crucial for things to get done and without them there might not be an America. There are many reasons slaves are important and though there importance in society is overshadowed by the bigger crimes and unfair acts commited aganist them. Knowing about slavery can give you a better understanding of the present. Slavery is a big part of american history because slaves helped America alot for example in the 13 colonies slaves helped adjust the land to be suitable for agriculture. Without the help of slaves, colonists might not have survived and this country could be dominated by French or Spanish. You may not use your knowledge about slavery in the future
but it's an important part of our history.
What we can learn from studying slavery in america is the importance of slaves and were not just badly treated people. For
example in the 13 colonies slavery wasn't used in georgia until 1750
and was used because colonists needed slaves. Without the slaves to come and do their work for them who knows what would have happened to the colonists. We cam also learn the economic benefits from slavery.
Things I'd like to know about slavery is some cases were a slave was taught to read and write, what would happen to them and who are
some real people it happen to. I would also like to learn if there
were any whites who didn't like slaveryand what they did about it. How were they treated by others and did they ever achieve anything about stopping slavery. And the last thing I would like about slavery is were there any slave revolts and what happened to them if they won or loss. Those are the only things I d like to learn about slavery.

Slavery should be an important topic in history classes because slavery is something that explains why so many things happen today. It explains why things are today, like Obama being the first black president. Slavery is your history, so it is about you. So why not learn about you? Slavery is something that happened to many Africans, so we should learn about why they were the ones who got treated like that. We need to know what they went through. You can even learn a lesson from slavery.

From studying slavery in America we can learn what the life of a slave was really like. You can also learn about how America relied on slaves to keep the economy up and especially in the South. You can learn everything behind slavery. What stories I would like to learn is, about how torturing slavery was, but when they stopped slavery in America, how badly affected the economy was, but especially the South. I want to learn how all the cotton, tobacco, and more on the plantations turned out in the end.

My answer is yes, slavery is an important topic in class. We can learn many things from it, such as how society has changed from back then to the present. We could learn how the treatment of African Americans led to a whole big war. From studying slavery, we could also gain knowledge about the efforts African Americans made to gain their freedom. These African Americans include Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, and Malcolm X to name a few.
I would like to learn about how African Americans managed to escape slavery. I would also like to learn the court cases against African Americans, such as Plessy vs. Ferguson. Another topic I'd like to learn is in what ways did the slaves put up resistance. Last, I'd also like to learn about the slave auctions, and about the most notable ones.

In my opinion, slavery should be an important topic in history classes. Slavery was an important role in the US history. Since slaves labor were create the Colonial United State from 1600’s. Learning slavery, we would know how lives looked like in 1600’s and the early 1700’s and how different groups of people treated like in the society. Slavery was the darkness time of the US history, it showed us that history isn’t always satisfactory.
I expect to learn how slavery changed their lives, how they escaped out from their dark time by used their knowledge. Also, I would like to learn about how slavery survived in the society after they changed their lives and how different from their slavery career.

Slavery is indeed talked about a lot. I’ve been hearing about it since 3rd grade, and I pretty much know the basic story by heart. Although it’s a subject that I really don’t like learning about since I already know it, I don’t think that it shouldn’t be taught. For one, it’s a very important subject and to tell you the truth, even though I’ve learned it for years every year that I learn it I find out something new. There are many reasons why slavery is important to the school curriculum.
Some things that we can learn from slavery are the fact that the history is not as perfect as we’ve been taught in the past. The Europeans were always perceived as somewhat of a fairy tale. But as you go deeper into your education you’ll find out more and more of the things that Europeans did to get what they want, some things totally unnecessary. Slavery wasn’t even needed they were just too lazy to do things on their own. With their huge families with many children it had to be laziness. We could grasp from these concepts that we should never let something as simple of how your skin color looks lead to hundreds of years of oppression. You could learn respect for other cultures, and the simple fact that it you shouldn’t judge a book by its color.
I think that we should especially learn about all the activists that fought slavery. I think that’s the topic they talk about least when they present that topic. Which is not cool because then we are perceived to be people who take what is given to us which is not necessarily true. Although slavery was in fact a very horrible situation, people did fight back and I think that that should be well known. Also I think that people need to know how severe it was. They often have a tendency to downplay the whole thing as well. That’s my views of slavery.

Slavery should be an important topic in History class. If we, as Americans, don't learn from our mistakes we're liable to repeat them. Slavery was a big mistake, and in order to not make the same mistake twice, we must learn from it. We can't be called the United States of America if all people within America aren't united. It's essential that the next generation learns that at one point in our history, a group of people were considered inferior to another group based on the color of their skin. Now a days, there are people of every race, color, and creed who stand side by side and work together to make America what it is today.

From studying the history of slavery in America, we can learn a number of different things. We can learn that equality is important when living amongst a diverse group of people. That forcing someone into labor against their will is wrong. Everyone should be free to make his or her own decision, and not have to answer to anyone other then themselves. Slavery is a vital part of America's history, without learning about what happened before us, how are we to know what to do in the future?

I would like to know how women slaves, who just gave birth, were able to work and care for their child. How the houses of slaves were similar and different to those of the slave owners. Which colony was most strict about slavery. What was a typical day like for a slave. As well, I would like to learn about the religious beliefs of slaves.

It is what it is. said...

1) In my opinion, slavery should be an important topic in history classes. Slavery is an important topic because if there wasn't any slavery back then, America wouldn't be the way it is right now. And so, slavery made a great impact on America, which seems important to me. It's also an important topic because slavery can teach us a lot of information. For example, human rights, how it all began, their lifestyles, etc. Even though slavery is an important topic, I think that slavery is too repetitive.

2) We can learn a lot from studying the history of slavery in America. We can learn to not make the same mistakes like we did in the past. Also, by studying the history of slavery, we are able to learn from our past mistakes. Slavery was a horrible thing, and it was a huge mistake. But that huge mistake is what made America the way it is today. Studying the history of slavery can also help us learn about the slaves themselves. For example, how they were being treated, their backgrounds, etc. And this is a few things that you can learn from studying the history of slavery in America.

3) I would like to learn about a lot of information about slavery. First, I would like to learn more about the one who started slavery, and was there a specific reason why they did it? Second, I want to know why almost all of the slaves are African-American. Third, I would like to know more about a typical slave's daily life. Fourth, if you're a slave, why does your babies has to be a slave too? And lastly, I want to learn more about women and children slaves.

In my opinion I think that slavery should be an important topic in history. I think this because it teaches how much the "color" people had to suffer in life because of their skin tone.

2)We can learn alot from studying about slavery. We can learn about the hardships they had to face everyday, their daily life. We can also learn about the people who tried to escape and the ones who were successful to do that, what happened to them? The ones who weren't able to escape what happened to them?We can also get the knowledge of why the whites started slavery, and alot more.

3)I would like to learn about their daily lives, why did slavery happened, who was the first person to go against slavery, and how each colony treated the slaves(did they treat them the same way or different?).

I strongly agree that slavery should be an important topic taught in history class. The reason for stating this is because slavery had last for over 6 centuries and slavery was the reason for the United states Civil War. Things we can learn about Slavery in America from history class is the brave hero's. Such as Harriet Tubman who was a brave African hero because during slavery she was the one who believe it was only right for slaves to be free. She was anti slavery also she was best known for the Underground RailRoad which was a route for slaves to follow for their freedom in the north.

Things i would want to know about slavery during the colonial and post revolution in the 1830's is about the slave trade. Also i would want to know William Llyod Garrison who was anti slavery. Lastly i'm curious to know how slaves established their own communities and churches.

No i don't think it should be taught in school. I think history classes should focus on things lick racism, for example the little rock nine, because to me it is more interesting hearing about it. I do think it is repetitive because slavery was the same around the world, and when the teacher teaches us about one country that is all we have to know.
