Reminder: OP-ED Are Due Tonight (Friday, November 8th by 11:59PM)

Hi folks.

Please remember that the OP-ED is due tonight (Friday, November 8th by 11:59PM).  Please see the following important info:

. This is a term 2 grade,
. Strive to have a great start and I should mention that there will be a lot less effort based turnitin.com assignments this term
. You can submit it late, but the penalties increase with time. There is a max 5 day period (for example a "B" becomes a "C+" after 1 day and a "D" in 5 days, but anything after 5 days is a zero).
. 500 to 700 words (less and more will result in penalties)
. Double Space, 12 Times New Roman
. LOOK AT THE RUBRIC
. Use a word processor to check your spelling and grammar

Feedback (from the ones that I have been reading):

. You need to avoid "I, Me, My". So let's not write "I think", "in my opinion", "I chose this topic because", "I will write about this", etc...
. This is not a research paper, so you shouldn't have several quotes
. If you do use quotes, choose quotes that highlight your argument
. You can just make general statements using your own words such as "there is plenty of evidence that Spanish soldiers were torturing and raping the natives" and this does not need an internal citation (this is an OP-ED and not a research paper)
. It is clear that we need to work on transitions and how to introduce quotes, so just try your best and we will work on this in term 2
. But you can avoid writing things such as "In the website named ..., this quote says "...".  This quote means"
. A more sophisticated way to do the above would be like "In Defense of Columbus article argues that "we cannot judge Columbus with morals that did not exist during his lifetime" (I JUST MADE THIS UP)
. If you address a counter-argument you can write the following: "While some argue that Columbus Day should be celebrated (or not), others argued that it should not because (or it should)...
. Try your best, that is the best that you can do and also don't make obvious statements (writing should be clever, written with a purpose and unique)

Have a wonderful 3 Day weekend!
