Friday's Homework: 1/27/17

Standard:

  1. Read the rest of Handout #1: Start with Revolution in the Air on page 58.
  2. On page 10 of the notebook: Write 3 quotes that help explain how this chapter got its name. In addition answer the following two questions:

  1. Why would conservative politicians and traditional historians and history teachers, dislike the name of this chapter? Be specific about the main idea that the name is trying to convey and be thoughtful about your response.
  2. Why is Zinn arguing that income inequality (extreme difference in wealth) was a problem in Colonial America?  Do you think that this is a problem today? Explain both answers and use evidence (quote) about colonial America.
  3. Who does Zinn blame for income inequality in Colonial America? Use evidence.

HONORS:

  1. Read pages 69-76
  2. On page 7 of the notebook: (Letter A, Page 7 & Letters B & C n the handout)

  1. In A People’s History, Howard Zinn asks, “And how could people truly have equal rights, with stark differences in wealth” (p. 73)? How would you answer these questions about present day America? Using evidence from the reading, how did Zinn answer this question about Colonial America?  Explain.
  2. Perhaps, the most frustrating thing about history textbook are the uninspiring, sugar-coated and even fraudulent and titles chosen for textbooks and  chapters of textbooks. Select 5 quotes that best represent why this chapter was named the way it was (it will help you on this unit’s writing prompt coming soon).
  3. Select at least 5 words that you do not know the meaning (or people or events) and write the definitions
