PROSECUTION & DEFENSE:

Based on the charges that the prosecution has created read documents D, E & F (HONORS PERIOD 4 will read the 2nd day of Bartolome De Las Casas: In Defense of the Indians (1550) and look for 3 to 5 pieces of evidence using a new evidence sheet which should be eventually printed and placed on page 49 Standard, 38 Honors.

Please read the 2nd set of readings from De Las Casas and answer the following questions (THIS NOT APPLY TO ANY 4TH PERIOD STUDENTS):

Honors Page 38, Standard Page 49 

  1. How would you contrast the viewpoints of Columbus and de Las Casas in regard to the “native people called Indians”? Do you think Columbus and de Las Casas agree or disagree about the goals of the Spanish explorers?  How and why?
  2. De Las Casas wrote these accounts fifty and sixty years respectively after Columbus initially arrived in Hispaniola. Do you think the intervening years may have influenced his perceptions? How and why? What happens when someone writes down an account after most of the consequences of an event are known?
  3. Do you think that de Las Casas’ voice was heard at the Royal Council of Spain in 1550? Who do you think would have opposed him or supported him? Explain.
