STANDARD:

I forgot that the Guidance Department was coming to our classes today, so we might have a little more homework.

A. Finish classwork

1. Do Now (write the answers on the margins or the back and all you have to do is to make educated guesses).  IF YOU WERE ABSENT, PLEASE DO #1, #6 and #7 ONLY.

2. Read A Young People's History of the United States Chapter 1 Part 1 (HANDOUT #25) and answer the following questions (IF YOU WERE ABSENT, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL MONDAY TO GET THE READING FROM ME)

READ: A Young People’s History of the United States Chapter 1 Part I and answer the following questions:

1. How would you respond to the following question often asked to Howard Zinn "Do you think that your history, which is radically different than the usual histories of the United States, is suitable for young people"? Explain.

2. Were the Arawaks given an impossible task as an excuse to kill all of them (genocide)? Why or why not? Use evidence.

3. How were the natives treated?  According to the reading? Use evidence.

HOMEWORK:

1. Read pages 37 to 39 of the textbook.  
2. Take 10 to 18 Key Points OR use THIS GRAPHIC ORGANIZER on page 42  of the notebook.
3. Summary OR Reflection on page 43 of the notebook.

2.  Read handout #25 and answer the following question (Columbus Diary Part 1): On page 32 answer the following questions:

1. Using evidence from the reading how does Columbus describe the Tainos to the Spanish What is his goal for doing so? Explain.
2. Using evidence from the reading, do you think that Columbus had good or bad intentions in regards to the Taino people?  Do you think that other European explorers would have acted differently?  Why or why not? Explain.

HOMEWORK:

1. Read pages 37 to 39 of the textbook.  
2. Take 10 to 18 Key Points OR use THIS GRAPHIC ORGANIZER on page 33 of the notebook.
3. Work on the 3 peer edit feedback, which is due by tonight (Saturday): 10/15 on Turnitin.com
