Tuesday's Homework: 9/20/16

STANDARD:

1. Read and annotate "A Young People's History of the United States, Rise Like Lions". There will be our first writing prompt tomorrow (Wednesday). ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ON PAGE 11 OF THE NOTEBOOK!

  • Why did Zinn write this book (according to himself)?
  • Why does Zinn believe there is no such thing as a "pure fact"?
  • Why does Zinn believe that "We the People" is misleading?
  • Accortding to Zinn, what are some issues that most history books overlook?
  • According to Zinn, how would America look like today if "the American people united for the first time in a movement for fundamental change...[if] people might behave if they were working together to build a new society"?
  • What were the "two forces racing toward the future"? Which one does Zinn wants us to join? Why? How does the poem by Shelley reinforce the force that Zinn wants us to join?
2. Complete the Self-Reflection Patriot vs. Loyalist Role Play Sheet (if this is not done, you will receive a 0 for the assignment).

HONORS:

1. Read and annotate "A People's History of the United States, Afterword". There will be our first writing prompt tomorrow (Wednesday). ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ON PAGE 11 OF THE NOTEBOOK

  • Why didn't Zinn"had no illusions about "objectivity"? Explain.
  • What was Robert Dole's problem with our educational system? How did Zinn respond to Dole's concern?
  • What themes were important to Zinn, but not as important to traditional history (according to Zinn)? 
  • What was Zinn's point by describing Kurt Vonnegut's "granfalloon"?
  • What were the "two forces racing toward the future"? Which one does Zinn wants us to join? Why? How does the poem by Shelley reinforce the force that Zinn wants us to join?    
  • Why is Zinn, not pessimistic although our history and recent past have not been kind to the 99% and foreign children?  


2. Complete the Self-Reflection Patriot vs. Loyalist Role Play Sheet (if this is not done, you will receive a 0 for the assignment).

3. New Honors students, must complete the first draft of the Columbus Paper by Friday, 9/23/16 by 11:59PM to be accepted into the Honors section.
