READ Chapter 2 of A Young People’s History of the United States and answer the following question on page 40 of the NOTEBOOK:
Howard Zinn argues that racism has been more potent and vicious in the United States than in any other country on Earth (past and present). Yet, he argues that racism in our nation was man made by a few to remain in power.
In 2 to 3 paragraphs: What does he mean by that and how was this achieved? Make sure to give evidence to back up your answer (page number as internal citation).

Read the “Account of the New York Tenant Riots ( July 14, 1766)” and On page 36, of the notebook, please answer the following questions:
- Why were local farmers living on land claimed by Van Rensselaer? Explain and use as much evidence as possible.
- Was the treatment of the local farmers by Van Rensselaer’s army legal? Why or why not?
- From reading this account, what role do you think private property played in the hearts and minds of these colonists? Did everyone have access to private property? Why, or why not?
- Does this passage about New York support or reject Zinn’s theory about the “complex chain of oppression”? Explain and use as much evidence as possible to support your answer.
