STANDARD CLASS WORK:

Read the handout “Chapter 3 (of A Young People’s History of the United States): Who Were the Colonists?” page 35 to 39 and stop at “ The Underclass”

On page 43 of the notebook answer the following questions:

1. Who was Nathaniel Bacon?  How did the British describe him?  Why did he fight against the rich? Explain and use evidence to support your answers.
2. What was the House of Burgesses?  
3. Who were diverse group of people that fought for Bacon?  Why did each group fight? Explain and use evidence to support your answers.
4. What does Howard Zinn mean by “a chain of oppression” in Virginia?  Explain and use evidence to support your answers.

HONORS CLASS WORK:

Read Letter Written by William Shirley to the Lords of Trade about the Knowles Riots (December 1, 1747). Answer the following questions on page 39 of the notebook.

LETTER WRITTEN BY WILLIAM SHIRLEY: Answer the following questions on page 39 of the notebook.

1. Howard Zinn's introduction to this letter explains that the riot described is in response to impressment. What is impressment?

2. How were militias raised in colonial America? What was the purpose of  "the militia of the town? What did it accomplish? Use as much evidence as possible to support your answers.  

3. Why does Governor William Shirley decide to stop "parleying with the  mob"? Use as much evidence as possible to support your answer.  

4. Massachusetts Puritan leader and governor John Winthrop, wrote in 1630 that “in all times some must be rich, some poore”.  He is the second person that we have studied that have said the same (Martin Luther).  Is Howard Zinn being too critical of Colonial America social class system?  What do you think? Explain.
