STANDARD CLASSWORK:


Read pages 39 and START @ “ The Underclass” to page 48: STOP @ “How to Rule”


On Page 46 of the notebook answer answer the following questions:

  1. Why did England force many people to move to the 13 Colonies? Explain and use evidence to support your answer.
  2. Is it fair to say that those who choose to move to the 13 Colonies (their own decision) move because of the “original American Dream (not found in the reading, you have to think about it)? Why or why not?
  3. Who was Gottlieb Mittelberger?  How did he describe the voyage that the indentured servants face?  Explain and use evidence to support your answer.
  4. Is if fair to call white indentured servants, white slaves?  Some of them? Any of them? Why or why not? Explain and use evidence to support your answer.
  5. Describe the different lifestyles and resources that the rich and poor had. Explain and use evidence to support your answer.


HONORS CLASSWORK:
Answer the following critical thinking questions related to what you have been learning from Zinn in chapters 2 and 3 of a People’s History of the United States and Voices of A People’s History of the United States on PAGE 42 of the notebook:

  1. Why do you think students seldom learn about plans to rebel, actual rebellions, and the rebellious beliefs of the American colonists with the exception of the Patriots and the American Revolution? Do you think it is important to hear these voices? Why, or why not?
  2. What do you think that Howard Zinn means by “the desperation of the poor was turned into profit by merchants and ship captains”? Explain.
  3. From a scale from 1 to 10, how would you rate the desperation and hate of the poor colonists?  Why? If you were the rich and powerful colonist in the late 1700’s, what could this hate have been used for besides the divide and conquer strategies discussed by Zinn in chapters 2 and 3? Explain.
