Dear students and parents,
On behalf of the legacy of the former John D. O'Bryant, I would like to welcome back the class of 2019 and their families! Thank you for choosing the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science and this is another step towards getting each and everyone of you to the college freshmen class of 2023.
Getting to a great college is not easy and quite honest not very affordable and unfortunately, I must confess or remind our students and parents that too many of our seniors have been going to community colleges or changing schools. The O'Bryant is an amazing school with a vast number of resources and connections to some great local colleges and If the students, parents and teachers (including me) work together we can make sure that each and everyone of all 9th grade students move on to a great four year college. This has to be teamwork and we have to strive for individual and collective success. As John D. O'Bryant put "If you're not here to serve the students, you're in the wrong place."
This will be my 7th year teaching at the O’Bryant and 13th year as an educator and I have seen some of my former students, including students who moved to the United States from Latin America, Caribbean and Asia in Middle School, work really hard and get full rides to colleges such as Harvard, MIT, Wellesley, Princeton, Cornell and many other amazing colleges. A few of my former students even used the honors papers that they wrote in my 9th grade class as sample writing submitted to colleges and last year a student who took this class 2 years ago used her research paper as the sample work that helped her get a full ride (including airfare) to the Standford University pre-college summer program.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to email me at ppittsdilley@bostonpublicschools.org and visit our class website to review a list of homework assignments and get help for special assignments (including the mandatory history research paper at the end of the school year) at www.whosehistory.blogspot.com I will provide students and families with a syllabus this week as well as information about how to enroll in the honors section next week.
Sincerely and enthusiastically,
Mr. Pitts-Dilley
