12th Grade We & They:
1. HPIE ASSIGNMENT: DUE ON FRIDAY AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS (IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE TYPED):
A. Please read the Harvard Program for
International Relations Chapter 1 (pages 3 to 14): Annotate (notes &
highlight/underline)
B. Using evidence from these readings
(quotes from ALL 4 short readings): Should the United Nations be abolished? Why or why not?
2. The final draft which was originally due by Thursday, October 16th by 11:59PM IS NOWDUE BY SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18TH BY 11:59PM. Please take a look at the peer editing comments and either come see me for help on Tuesday or Thursday after school, and/or schedule an appointment. These are general comments:
1. Avoid "I", "Me" and "Mine" ("we" also). If it does not have an internal citation, then it is your opinion and you do not have to use those pronouns (you can use "this author").
2. Many papers lack evidence. Your paper should have lots of quotes from the Bomb and additional quotes from the speeches, narratives and other materials given in class from Voices of A People's History of the United States (Easy Bib IT!) and the 5 websites given in class.
3. Evidence requires INTERNAL CITATIONS!
4. Don't forget a works cited page!
5. In a counter-argument (s), first you name it, then you explain it (some historians/politicians/people argue or would argue...), then given evidence (quotes) defending it, then attack [why is your thesis/claim still more powerful than the counter-argument(s)] it with explanations and then use evidence to attack it.
6. Quotes are there to enhance your papers. So please present your thoughts first and then use quotes to enhance your perspective (this is an argumentative/opinion based paper). A few people look for random quotes first and then they try to come up with explanations.
7. Conclusions were not meant to be a repetitive narration of your paper. Add a final insight such as "what if"... A great Conclusion to me is like a great boxer or MMA fighter who is not sure if he or she will win in a decision by judges and as a result he or she wants to knock out his or her opponent in the final round!
