The ideas you have for us are very interesting and definitely different from any other experience I've had. Sadly, I do not think I will be able to attend these trips due to the return date (very important wedding). It would be a tremendous opportunity for all of us to help out the less fortunate and get an inside look of what it feels like to actually be poor. If I were to choose a place to go, it would be Santo Domingo. I like this place because of the more affordable price and the land is beyond beautiful. It would be amazing to go to Brazil, but it is more realistic to choose Santo Domingo.

My impression of these international trips is that I think that they are a great thing to do because of the people we would be helping and and the experience of traveling all together. I would like to go to Rio because the beaches look nice and it looks overall more beautiful than the other places. I have heard the most about Rio and it seems like a great place to visit. Nothing about these places upset me. I think that you chose this theme because racism is a very real thing and something that still happens today and we need to have more of an outlook as to what is going on and get a glimpse of how others live.

1. locally my impression would be to get to know the people around the area, learnt he culture and use whatever i see and learn there to reflect my life, i want to be able to see parts of this area that struggle but also the part not having any living problems, relating everything back to U.S. Internationally i want to be a mentor from America that people of a younger age and leave an impact on them to change how they live and hopefully myself change the lifestyle, i want to make a difference to children and let them know struggling is not the end of the world.
2. if money was not a issue and if i could be at two places at once i'd like to visit rio or recife because obviously they're the prettiest and them being so attractive is the reason they are so expensive, but being so beautiful you wonder what could possibly be wrong with them which is why you'd want to know; to find out and hopefully help.
3. i wouldn't say anything upset me, your working so hard and we have to out in just the same amount of effort to do what we want and the fact that your giving us an option is not upsetting to the least bit.
4. i very much like the theme of the trip, it fits the class and would change alot of people's views.
5. i think you chose it for the purpose that i enjoy it; eye opening of the way different people live, to get open minded, and because it fits the class.

1. I don't mind what you want us to do locally since volunteering will help us with college and prepare us for what we'll be doing on the trip.
2. I definitely want to go back to Rio because I loved it and it would be easier financially for me because my grandparents in Rio would be more than willing to help me pay for the trip. Rio is also beautiful and I do want to see what it's like inside a favela.
3. Nothing did.
4. I like the theme for the trip because many people in Brazil are in the positions they are in or are treated the way they are treated because of their race.
5. I think you chose this theme because racism affects everyone everywhere and you want us to help people that are affected by this.

1. I am impressed that we will be helping people in many different ways. In Rio, alone, there a many different options. I think it is a great list of options to choose from and I wouldn't mind what we do.
2. I would like to go anywhere in Brazil but an emphasis on Rio de Janeiro because I have family who is from there and it is a beautiful place. Also, I like the activities we would be engaging in Brazil more. I wouldn't mind go to Santo Domingo because it also is a pretty place to be.
3. Nothing upset me
4 and 5. I like the theme because it fits; in Brazil we would be dealing with Black/Afro-Brazilians who are discriminated against. I think you chose it for that reason and because we will be exploring racism in Brazil soon in class

I believe that your ideas are very clear and they are demonstrating how interactive will would be on this trip. It is good that you are making it clear that we are not going for just a vacation, it is with a purpose. We cannot just make it seem like we want to go to somewhere exotic with this "random" class, they would probably say you can just go pay for it. We automatically would have an advantage because we are doing something good for society. IF we continue to emphasize on our purpose to do this trip, whether it is when you we are applying for grants, fundraising money or asking airlines how much each of our ticket will be, it should make a difference. If they could not do it themselves, the best that they could do is allow someone else to do what they currently cannot.

1. I am impressed about what you want us to learn on a local as well as an international level because it is a different method from what we are accustomed to.

2. I would like to go to Santo Domingo, simply because I have always wanted to go there.

3. No

4. I like the theme of the trip because this is the perfect opportunity for us to demonstrate our humanitarian side as well as engage academically to the trip.

5. You chose this theme because we are dormant and not engage in our academics and humanitarian side as much as we can be.

1. I am impressed with the fact that you want to do so much to help people who are not able to help themselves. It is cool that you are not only interested in helping people in the US but you want to help people internationally. Knowing that you're from Brazil, I think it is great that you want to give back to the country you were born in.
2. I would be the most interested in going to Rio mainly because we would be helping Habitat for Humanity. I like what Habitat for Humanity does so I would love to help them out. (If New Orleans was an option, that would be my #1 choice)
3. No
4. Yes, I think a service learning trip would be great for us because not all of us have had an opportunity like this before and I think we would learn a lot.
5. I think you chose this theme because the theme of our class has to deal with different things going on in other countries like racism, living conditions, etc and by going abroad we would learn about this stuff first hand.

I would love to go to Rio, but anyone of the four will be just fine. Although we will be doing community service, but we would still want some fun to be included.Rio is a very beautiful city and being able to visit Rio is such an excitement.Being able to help people gives me such a fulfilling satisfaction. I believe that you have the same mentatlity as most of us MR.PPD, community service is very important and not many acknowlege it. Weŕe one of the few groups that believe helping others and doing community service is actually helping our community.

Going to Rio De Janerio would be an amazing opportunity to go to. Not only, is Rio a breath taking place, the community work that we would do, would be an amazing experience. Not everyday you hear someone say they went to Rio to renovate homes, participate in activities with children, and teach English. Nothing had upset me. This theme is not what everyday things a teenager would do. So, us doing this would open our eyes and show us a world outside of what we are so familiar with.

Unknown said...

1. I like what you want us to do abroad, I think it would be a great experience for both us as students visiting a different country and the people in the community to be able to get to know people from a completely different cultural background.
2. I would like to go to Rio De Janeiro because it's such a beautiful city but the city and the favelas seem to be completely different places which makes me very interested in the trip.
3. No, nothing upset me.
4. Yes, because we are helping out the people in the country by building homes, ect but we also get to interact with the people of the country and understand the racism that goes on in the country.
5. I like the theme, but I also think it should be more about helping the people instead of just discussing their problems with racism.

Joseph said...

My impression is that you want us to travel to a new place to help out people in need and learn about the concept of perspective. Out of the four locations, I want to travel more to Rio, disregarding the cost. It looks like a beautiful country that I would love to see with my own eyes, and also help others in need. In general I would want the cost to be lower but that is for the students to help lower it.

erica imoisi said...

1. It seems like you want to help people not only in a physical way (building house) but mentally to be in a better place to defend themselves.
2. I want to go to Rio de Janeiro because people would not believe, as tourist-y as it looks, that there are poor people there that don't have homes. I want to be able to help those people out in ways that they will truly appreciate more than they would a quarter from a person walking by.
3. No.
4. Yes the plans for the trip sound pretty great.
5. I think you chose it because growing up there, you know what is a problem in Brazil.

Brian Vong said...

1. I think that it is great that we are getting involved with other schools and communities. I would like to help out these people and rebuild their community areas since I had been already doing community service in Boston as a venture scout.

2. I don't really mind going anywhere because I am probably not going to go anyway. Its a slim chance but If I had to choose I would pick Rio because the renovation projects would be pretty cool and I had never been there before nor any of the other locations.

Unknown said...

I believe that what we would be doing is an admirable and commendable mission. I would go to Rio de Janerio because it is an international hub that can use help to make it that more better. Nothing did disturb me except for the fact that New Orleans was taken off the list. I think you chose this trip because it not only helps those in need, but also so we can see how other parts of the world are and how our lives compare.

Unknown said...

It's a good thing that you have considered a good and possible plan by making a theme for the class to do locally and internationally.I would like to go to Rio de Janerio, Brazil but it was fine for the class to go to any 4 of the locations.

itsanitaaa said...

1) My impression about what you would like us to do locally and internationally is that we get to have an opportunity to do what most other schools and students would never take the time to look into. I'm very grateful for this opportunity to be able to participate in a trip that'll make, what seems small, an impact on a community in a part of this world.
2) I'm not picky with where we decide to go, but all I'm interested in is looking into a trip that'll guarantee that more students will have the opportunity to go on this trip together. That's why I was more interested in the cheaper trip, because many students would be able to afford it and more students would be able to go. If us, as students, really want to go to Brazil, then we'd be able to get enough grants to go and to pay for a cheaper trip. I don't have any specific preferences.
3) I'm not upset with anything within the grants.
4) I absolutely love the idea of going on a trip.
5) I believe that you chose this theme because you want us to be able to acknowledge that humanity isn't just based on the color of our skin but that we're able to lend a helping hand to everyone.

Arthur Nin,

1. The scenery in Rio de Janiero, Brazil is just sublime. The vivid and intricate city streets and veins look completely stunning. I think that the proposed ideas coincide with our natural humane moral. I believe that the community service facet of this class is ampliative. We help others around us, and by helping our community around us we begin to build upon our appreciation of what a community offers.
2.a Rio de Janiero, Brazil is one of the most intricate cities I have ever seen. It looks so lavish and of a lucrative society. I have an urge to see the monuments and amazing scenery.
3. No nothing upset me.
4. I love the trip in its entirety. The beauty and the righteousness just permeates through it all, i cannot wait to be apart of this trip.
5. I think you chose this theme because of the ordeals that you have seen. You yourself have lived in Brazil and know what a struggle is. You want to help these people and this is the perfect way in which to do just that.

Unknown said...

i think this is a good theme because it focuses on helping communities and bettering us as students and up and coming adults. the only problem i ahve with this is that i did not know we needed a 200 dollar deposit by next tuesday.

1. My impression was that everything we're doing locally helps us for when we go out to do it internationally.
2. I would like to go to either Rio de Janeiro or Recife, because they both look like cities for tourists. Both cities looks extremely pretty.
4. The theme of the trip basically resembles the meaning of our class. I like it because it's something I wouldn't learn about on a daily basis.
5. I think you chose the theme because we normally don't think about things like this, so you're basically giving us the chance to free our minds and to think about other things.

1. My impressions about what you would want us to do locally and internationally is that it is a great opportunity for us students to become more aware of foreign countries. We are constantly narrowed down on our awareness on other countries because we don’t feel connected to them in no type of way. Through critical dialogue and community service internationally there is a bigger emphasis on being more knowledgeable on racism and poverty throughout the world. I find the events you have proposed for us to do locally and internationally seem very engaging and hands on.
2. Of the 4 locations I would like to go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I prefer to go to this location because Rio de Janeiro seems to have the biggest population. With a higher population, through our volunteering we will be able to impact the community more positively and affecting the lives of more people.
3. Nothing in the application upset me.
4. I do like the theme for the trip because it allows us to juxtapose other countries to the United States regarding racism. Even though racism has been “eliminated” in the United States, other countries in the world are still having conflicts behind the race of their citizens.
5. I think you chose this theme because it is very modern and its something we can relate back to our country’s history. Also, I think you chose this theme because it allows us see racism from other countries POV on the subject and how they react to such a thing.

I really like the fact that we are able to spread our talents locally and join these various schools or organizations for community service. It feels great to give back to the community and help fellow OB kids because I have been at OB since 7TH grade. Internationally, I feel that, it would be a great opportunity to help those in need outside of the US because have it worst than us. I would love to go to Santo Domingo because it is very beautiful, and a interesting place to go to. Also, I would really like to help kids with HIV and teach them various subjects and help them get better at what they are doing. Also, I haven't been to another island other than my home land (Trinidad), so that would be good. I felt that the theme is really good and really capatilizes what we are trying to do. I felt that you chose this theme because we are truly trying to transform the world and the community through our community service.

Unknown said...

1. I think that it's a terrific thing that we do both international and local community service because we see the difference we can make not only in our community but outside the country. It will give us the different aspects of life that we do not see everyday in our community.
2. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic because I always wanted to visit DR and see the beautiful scenery of DR. I would also like to see the difference in the islands between DR and PR.
3.Nothing upset me.
4. Yes i do like the theme of the trip because it's something different and creative.
5. I think that you chose the theme to try and pursue in the grant that we are doing something good in both the local and international community.

I like we we are doing locally and internationally because I love helping other people, and getting to work with others to see how they are living and experience what their daily lives are and how we can help. I would like to go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil because it seems different. Nothing upset me because I know that its going to take a lot for you to trust us since we are going international with you. It's only right for us to prove to you our worth. I like the theme because it's different and we can learn a lot from these country's. I think you choose it to give us a feel of something different and how we can help to change and help other people's lives and I think it would be good for all of us.

Jyoti Sharma said...

1. My impressions about what you would like us to do locally and internationally are that I actually really like it. I mostly like that we are going to teach English to those who don't know it, especially teens.

2. I would like to go to Rio de Janeiro, mosly because I always wanted to see the Christ the Redeemer and Maracanã Stadium. I am a huge football/soccer fan so seeing the Maracanã Stadium would be very exciting for me ( as the 1950 and 2014 FIFA Cup was hosted here).

3.No, I am not upset about what we are planning to do rather I am upset about the poor conditions that we will get to witness. Nobody deserves to live their life like that. It's so sad ( for me especially)to find out about that people don't have shelter in other parts of the world while I am living a very grateful life here. This opens my mind more and is very refreshing.

4.Yes, I like the theme of racism and prejudice. I think everyone should be aware of situations like these where people miss opportunities because of this prejudice and racism.

5. I think you chose this theme for the trip because we tend to forget about how racism and prejudice is still there as we live here (Boston, which is very diverse). We don't see how much and how badly it affects people's lives.

Unknown said...

All in all, the impression insinuated from the community service activities we partake in locally, is one that displays compassion towards inner city kids. We are a support system for them if they do not have others in their lives to look up to. Internationlly it would impose the same impression but the impression that we will get to look at issues that affect different people culturally and how kinds of environments could influence a variety of mindsets and varieties.
Of all places listed, I would not mind visiting any of the places. Rio de janeiro stands out most because I have heard of many beautiful things to see there such as their monument of Jesus Christ.
Things im afraid of is contracting a disease from some kind of contact with an infected person or animal.I wouldn't complain about locations as long as we have been blessed with some grant, covering costs of travel.

1. What are your impressions about what I would like us to do locally and internationally?
My impressions about what you would like us to do locally and internationally is encouraged but nervous. I know you have been working on this grant for a long time but getting to read it brings a new feeling within me. From day one I wanted to go on the trip because of the joy it would bring me to travel and help others of a minority. But seeing how serious you are taking it and what an impact it will have gets me nervous. I am going to have the opportunity to change someone's living conditions and maybe mindset.
2. Which of the following 4 locations would you like to go to (look up images and information about these places if you want)? Why?
a. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I am somewhat aware of the social inequality and porverty of the country. I am aware of the past and recent conflicts that involve the newly built arena of the Olympics from last year. With my basic background of the conflicts I feel that I will find more purpose in my actions.
3. Did anything upset you? If not, just say so. No.
4. Do you like the theme for the trip? Why or why not?
I like the theme for reasons that may come off as offensive to my race. I see and hear about the United States racism everyday and it always goes to the core of African-Americans being in slavery. Yes, it happened but we are always the center of attention what about those getting the same treatment in other countries.
5. Why do you think that I chose this theme? Explain.
We have seeing the "we" view for quite some time now, some of us all our lives. Learning about the 'they' and their issues an broaden our knowledge and own spectrum of racism.

_INAMI_yo said...

1. My impression is excited but more nervous. Now fully knowing how serious you are taking this and the expectations you have from us. This 'trip' is more than a trip. This is our chance to actually make a change in the living conditions and may be even mind sets of other people.
2. I want to go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil because I already have some background to the social inequality and property from the country. I'm aware how the building of the Olympic stadium created controversy between the rich and the poor.
3. No, nothing has upset me.
4. Yes, because I am very familiar with the racism with the United States by what I see and hear. I want to know more about the inequality within other countries than my own.
5. I think the heme comes from the aspen name of hHe class, "We & They". For years and some of us, all of our lives we have only seen through the eyes of "We", now we will have the chance to see through the eyes of "they, and help them.

1) I am impress with the activities that we will be doing while going to Brazil.
2) If we go to Brazil I would love to go to Rio de Janeiro because not only is it beautiful, you can show us the nice places because you have family and friends there.
3) Nothing upset me.
4) I like the theme for this trip because you want to educate us at a young age. And although there are laws about racism, there are still places where it exist.
5) You chose this topic because although we might not like in poverty you want us to learn and see what its like to be in poverty. Also help a family and then feel proud about the work that we have done.

1. My impressions of what you're planning for us to do locally and internationally on these trips are of appreciation and recognition of how much time and effort it took for you to write up each place that we'd visit and be a support to. Other impressions of mine are how you've already prepared the centers and neighborhoods that will be visiting. What also fascinates me is all the help and involvement that this trip includes for us to take part in. My other impressions are how you completely layed out the plan for Brazil, D.R., and New Orleans.

2. Of the four places I'd want to visit Rio de Janiero because I know that it's a very big urban city that is known for having many celebrations and carnivals, and the best beaches. Another reason I'd want to go to Rio is to embrace the music and delicious food there, as well as visit the Tijuca National Park.

3. Nothing really upset me by any of this, I was pretty content.

4. The theme of rethinking racism through having conversations on race, prejudice, and progress is a theme that I'm okay with but that I don't love. Even though racism is a major issue, I feel another theme could've been more appealing.

5. If I was to guess as to why you selected racism, prejudice, and the progress of that as the theme, I'd say because they're continuous and prolonged issues that still exist all over the world in people that act with ignorance. The theme you selected helps to raise that issue and educate more on how prejudice and racism is wrong.

martin said...

1. I would say that i was impressed with what you would like us to do. I was aware already of the community service we were planning to do, but what i did not know was that we would have seminars on race and prejudice with university students. I am interested in these seminars because i have been apart of many discussions of these topics with students in my school, but never have i don't it with people of another country. Especially a country where race and prejudice is a pretty big issue. I'd like to see how the people of Brazil view this topic versus how we (Americans) see the topic. Are our views similar? different?
2. I would like to go to Rio de Janeiro. First off it is the cheapest of all the possibilities in Brazil (which surprised me) and from the pictures that i've seen online looks like the most aesthetically pleasing. I will be honest that the sports activities helped me make my decision as well because last school year i worked in an afterschool program and i spent a good amount of time doing sports activities with the kids and i loved it. Nothing upset me in factim looking forward to this trip. I do like the theme of this trip because i feel like this trip will expose us more to the problems in the world. We can read and learn all we want about some of the issues, but i think that this trip will expose us to the issues so we can really see whats going on.

1. Everything that we are doing internationally and locally are inexplicably connected, creating bridges between Boston and another community, between we and they. Until we all all realize that we are they, they are we.
2.
a. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
b. Pelotas, Brazil
c. Recife, Brazil
d. Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
any of them are fine, (mostly I'm concerned about money), I liked building houses in New Orleans but I also want to interact more with the people we are helping, I really want to go to the orphantage.
3. not really, although this year I have a lot of time constraints, slightly worried about fundraising.
4. The theme for this trip is very powerful, especially coming from a place where we often pretend that racism does not exist, this is a crucial dialogue we should be having.
5. Racism is very much present in the U.S. it just likes to lie hidden, between the gaps in America's smiles. Just today someone called me racist, for no good reason other than being Asian (The conversation went: Random stranger intrudes in my conversation with a friend: do you guys like stand up comedy? My friend and I: no... , Stanger: do you know kevin hart? Me: Ohhh Yeah, Stranger: WOW YOU'RE SO RACIST ASIANS ARE WORST THAN WHITE PEOPLE THESE DAYS) 23 hours later I'm still not exactly sure how I qualify for racist for knowing Kevin Hart and it was even more ironic because I with my friend who was hispanic during this whole conversation. If I was a racist person, I would be the worst racist person ever.

I completely agree with your beliefs on why this trip should happen. First hand experience is always the best way to learn things about the world we live in. It always has been this way and doesn't seem like it will ever change no matter what type of advanced technology we come by (besides completely immersive virtual reality in which senses can be generated).

I have grown up with the mindset that I refuse to become part of the system as just another cog that will "fit in" and live a life set by society because it's believed to be the only way. Unfortunately, education seems to come closer and closer to the belief that academic knowledge is most important. This eliminates the chance of these types of experiences where students are given the opportunity to travel to a different location and do something fitting to their learning environment.

It may sound a little confusing because I'm not entirely sure how to speak out what I mean, but it's basically like the argument that you make about our education system working as an actual industry with information being passed along in a robotic sense.

2. I'd love to go to Rio to help in anyway possible. It's Brazil's tourist park and I feel this should be a great taste to everyone: beaches, attractions, and a taste of urban environment in a different country.

My impression on your goals and what you would like to do locally and internationally is that you clearly care for people that are less fortunate and you want to go out of your way to help them build their lives or futures. I personally like this goal of helping kids locally because they are our future but also expanding this goal and going international and help children and families overseas. I honestly can not go to any of the four locations because of personal reasons and simply because it does not convenience me in what I plan to do for my self.
Nothing you said upset me everything was pretty fair and clear. nothing to out of control or outrageous. I do infact like the theme of the trips of going to other places to help less fortunate families its priceless in knowing that you helped a family get one step closer to getting back on their feet and help the children of where ever we go to help the future by doing something. The reason why i think you chose this theme was because you want us to get to see outside of our normal experience and experience it hands on from other prospective.

1. My impressions about what you would like us to do locally and internationally sounds great because we are able to help people and learn from them. The service learning that I am doing at the Trotter allows me to observe and evaluate how the students differ. This allows us seniors to help the students who are struggling and learn from them. The students learn from us while we also learn from them. In the class we discuss about racism and class in MA and if we go internationally to another country then we are able to compare racism and prejudice there. This trip will allow us to learn about how race and class play a major role in racism and allow us to experience the cultures of the community.
2. I would want to go to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil because it’s one of Brazil’s major cities and in cities you could experience Brazil’s cultures and diversity because it’s mostly crowded. The atmosphere would probably be loud and cheerful. I would want to go to Pelotas, Brazil too because in a New York Times article explains that this city have “victims of peculiar prejudice”. Others believe that this city have men that are homosexuals. These stereotypes have lead to discrimination to men there. People always believe what they hear but it’s not always true. Pelotas, Brazil might have a different community then Rio de Janeiro and we could learn from this community. I would want to go to Recife and Santo Domingo too. There’s history and heritage in all the locations.
3. Nothing upset me in the grant.
4. I do like the theme from this trip because I feel that I would learn a lot from this service learning and experience new heritages and cultures. I know that racism and prejudice happens in our everyday lives and being able to experience and listen to it in Brazil or the Dominican Republic will open my perspective about the world and how it can be change. I love listening to people stories because it inspires me as a person.
5. I think you choose this theme because you want us to know what’s happening in our everyday lives. You want to expose us to racism and prejudice and make us comfortable to talk about it. This allows us to evaluate and analyze to make connections with other things that happen in our life. We all have experience or witness racism and prejudice from others.

I do understand the good intentions of the trip, however I do doubt that people would be at ease at discussing such delicate topics as we easily do. I do understand the need to help the less fortunate, with that I definitely support what the trip is all about.
If money was not an issue, I would definitely choose to go to Brazil. Therefore, indo not mind going to Dominican Republic.
Nothing you said has upset me.
The theme goes hand in hand with the goals of the trip. The theme is perfect.
If I was to guess, I would say its because these issues are the main reasons why the human race is not moving forward.
