1. Read the introduction to Child of the Dark. On page 30 of the notebook how does Brazilian slavery and segregation look similar and different to U.S. slavery and segregation (2 to 3 paragraphs). THIS IS DUE ON FRIDAY (TOMORROW)
2. Read the 3rd chapter of the HPIE BOOK “Japan: Moving In and Out of the Sun” pages 26 to 37 (only read the section that goes along the question that you want to answer).
On a separate sheet of paper, answer ONLY ONE of the following questions using evidence from the reading that goes along it (1 to 2 pages and pick the question that interests you the most AND THIS IS DUE ON MONDAY AT THE BEGINNING OF CLASS):
1. How was Japanese colonialism different and similar to those practiced by Europe and the United States? Which one was more pervasive (from “The Empire of the Sun")?

2. How has technology helped and failed Japan in the case of “The Lessons of Fukushima Daiichi”? In your opinion can humans ever be too dependent on technology or should we continue to embrace it? Explain.
